Effects of spin and isospin degrees of freedom for pion--nucleus scattering in the Glauber-theory
- eds.
In lectures from the LAMPF summer school. The elastic scattering of negatively charged pions from /sup 12/C and /sup 4/He in the region of the 3,3 resonance was considered using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. Both spin- flip excitations and charge-exchange transitions are included. It is assumed that after every two scatterings the nucleus returns to the ground state. The sum over intermediate excited states internal to the successive pairs of scatterings is evaluated using closure techniques. Antisymmetrized shell-model wave functions are used for the nuclear states, and Fermi motion effects are included in first order. The scattering series is evaluated numerically. The results indicate that at energies below the 3.3 resonance the spin and isospin degrees of freedom are important but their inclusion does not bring about agreement with experiment. Above the resonance they do help to improve agreement with the data. (auth)
