Title: Coaxial beam-diagnostic probe

Journal Article · · Nucl. Instrum. Methods, v. 116, no. 1, p. 197

The performance of the coaxial beam probe is improved by correct termination with the characteristic impedance of the coaxial probe. Test results are presented with 30 keV electron bunches at 50 x 10/sup 7/ pps. (WHK) Three methods devised for ripple elimination in the power supply of the 7-GeV proton synchrotron Nimrod are described. The first ripple filter is a closed-loop active system known as the primary ripple filter (p.r.f.), and reduces the ripple voltages developed across the magnet windings by introducing into the convertor plant output an alternating signal whose magnitude and phase are such that they oppose any power-supply ripple. The static ripple filter (s.r.f.) was specifically intended to offer very good smoothing during the flat-top period, and is an example of a passive system. It is usually operated in conjuction with the p.r.f., which then provides smoothing only during current rise. The frequency characteristics of the two filters already described do not extend far enough to cover the entire ripple spectrum. An examination of synchrotron performance showed that a particularly troublesome component was the second harmonic of the powersupply fundamental, i.e., about 100 Hz. To eliminate this single frequency from the power-supply output, a method was devised for controlling one convertor group in each half of the power supply to generate a 2nd-harmonic component in the power- supply output. This generated voltage was then adjusted in amplitude and phase to cancel out the unwanted ripple. (UK)
