The barium--lithium equillbrium system has been investigated in the liquid and solid state over the entire composition range. The liquidus and solidus curves were determined by thermal analysis. Barium (m.p. 725 deg ) and lithium (m.p. 180.5 deg ) form an intermediate hase. BaLi/sub 4/, which melts incongruently at 156 deg . BaLi/sub 4/ and lithium form a eutectic at 70 weight % barium which melts at 143 deg . No measurable solid solubilities were found in the system. The x-ray-diffraction pattern of BaLi/sub 4/ is in good agreement with a hexagonal cell having as its dimensions a/sub 0/ = 10.92 plus or minus 0.01 A. and c/sub 0/ = 8.94 plus or minus 0.01 A. with c/a = 0.818. The density was found to be 1.75 plus or minus 0.05 g./cm/sup 3/ which requires a cell content of six molecules of BaLi/sub 4/. (auth)
