THE FORMATION OF Na$sup 24$ AND P$sup 32$ WHEN HIGH-ENERGY PROTONS ENTER INTO INTERACTION WITH COMPLEX NUCLEI

The cross section for Na/sup 24/ and P/sup 32/ production was determined by means of radiochemical methods. Gu, La, Au, and Th were bombarded with protons of from 120 to 660 Mev. The cross sections are tabulated. (TCO) Gamma radiation from a La/sup 140/--Ba/sup 140/ source was used to irradiate deuterium. The resulting neutrons activated rhodium or silver foils. The beta activity of the foils was measured. The 2.6-Mev gamma rays of Th/sup 228/ were used to initiate the same reactlon. A companison of the results led to the determination of the intensity of the 2.5-Mev gamma emission of La/sup 140/ as 0.05 quantum/ decay. (J.S.R.)
