TENTATIVE METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF COBALT AS AN IMPURITY IN ZIRCONIUM AND ZIRCALOY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4328809

Cobalt in buffered hydrofluoric acid solution is extracted with chloroform as the nitroso-naphtholate comp1ex. The extract is evaporated to dryness, the organic materia1 destroyed, and the cobalt reacted with nitroso-R salt in a hot acetate buffered solution to give a soluble red complex salt. Hydroch1oric acid is then added to decompose nitroso-R coraplexes of other heavy metals. Coba1t is then determined by spectrophotometric measurement at 510 mu. The method is applicable to the determination of cobalt in zirconium and Zircaloy in the concentration range of 0.5 to 30 ppm on a one gram sample basis. (auth)
