Knowledge of the biological effects of ionizing radiations, and in particular the dose-effect relation enabled the essential health physics criteria to be defined: the radiosensitivity of various tissues and their after- irrsdistion recovery power; the thresholds for the appearsnce of noxious effects; the induction of randoni effects. Data concerning the various ways in which the human body is exposed to ionizing radiation serve as a base for the establishment of radiological safety standards. (FR)
