A measurable exchange has been observed in methanol and ethanol between the iodine atom in p-methylbeuzyl iodide and the iodide ion in potassium iodide. The exchange reaction was investigated over a temperature range from 0 deg to 30.9 deg C. The total iodide concentration in methanol and in ethanol ranged from 0.00123 to 0.009l9M and from 0.0014l to 0.00977M, respectively. The rate laws for the exchange reaction are given. A measurable exchange has also been observed between the iodine atom in p-carbomethoptpbenzyl iodide and the iodide ion in potassium iodide over the same temperature range. The total iodide concentration in methanol and in ethanol ranged from 0.00134 to 0.00555M and from 0.00135 to 0.00962M, respectively. The rate laws for the eschange reaction are given. A summary of the rate constants, activation energies, frequency factors, and entropies of activation for all the para-substituted iodides studied is presented. (auth)
