THE PROMPT RADIATIONS IN THE SPONTANEOUS FISSION OF Cf$sup 25$$sup 2$

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4326844

This is a revision of A/CONF.l5/P/6S2. The availability of comparatively large sources of the isotope Cf/sup 252/ has made it possible to undertake a program of measurements of the prompt radiations emitted in the spontaneous fission of this isotope. Cf/sup 252/ has a spontaneous-fission half life of seventy years, and sources emitting neutrons at the rate of- approximates 10/sup 7/ neutrons per minute have been used in the work to be described. The experiments were performed to obtain information which would lead to a better understanding of the fission process and fission energetics. The energy released in fission is distributed in fission-fragment kinetic en ergies, gamma radiations, and prompt neutron emission. An attempt to make simultaneous measurements of as many as possible of the energies, multiplicities, and angular distributions of the radiations in single-fission events was made. (auth)
