Use of irradiation for the treatment of various animal feed products

Results are summarized from investigations on the use of ionizing radiations for the sterilization of pathogenic microorganisms in animal feeds. Data are reported from stadies on the lethal radiation dose for various strains of Salmonella, Bacillus anthracis, and various strains of Enterobacteriaceae, the effects of doses of 0.8 Mrad to 5 Mrad radiation on the wholesomeness of various protein concentrates used in animal feeds; the radiopreservation of meats used in animal diets; and the cost of radiation processing for extension of the storage life of animal feeds.
