NUCLEAR RESONANCE FLUORESCENCE IN O$sup 1$$sup 6$ (in German)

Journal Article · · Z. Naturforsch
OSTI ID:4325482

The reaction F/sup 19/(p, alpha gamma )O/sup 16/ produces gamma radiation by the direct transition of the 7.12 Mev(1/sup -), 6.91 Mev(2/sup +/), and 6.14 Mev(3/sup -/) levels to the ground state (0/sup +/) of the O/sup 16/ nucleus. Because of the O/sup 16*/ recoil, produced by the preceding alpha emission, a Doppler displacement of the gamma line occurs. Resonance fluorescence is therefore expected when the impact loss of the quantum is compensated for by the emission and absorption through the Doppler effect. The experiment shows that the 7.12 and 6.91 Mev levels can be excited, but not the 6.14 Mev level. From the effective cross section as well as from the (p, alpha ) and the ( alpha , gamma ) distribution of the calculated Doppler spectra, low values can be obtained for the life of both excited states.
