An attempt is made to analyze the impact of escalating oil prices upon the international money markets and the balance of payments positions of the major powers. It is unknown what effect the quadrupled export prices will have throughout the international economy. The bounds of the problem and illustrations of several issues are discussed covering the parameters of the oil price increase; the prior role of middle eastern oil in the international balance of payments; the contribution of oil price increases to inflation; the impact of price increases upon trade balances; their implications for financial markets; and interpretations and tentative conclusions.
