PARAMAGNETIC RESONANCE IN THE 10,000 Mc BAND OF EUROPIUM AND GADOLINIUM SUBJECTED TO A CUBIC CRYSTALLINE FIELD (in French)

Bivalent Eu and trivalent Gd appear as impurities in natural fluorite, CaF/sub 2/. They were subjected to an electric field of cubic symmetry, and both were in a /sup 8/S/sub 7/2/, ground state. The paramagnetic resonance spectra observed at 10,000 Mc permitted the deduction of total base separation DELTA E, the ratio R between the three Stark sub-levels which are slightly different from 3/5, and the Lande factor, g. We found the following values; for Gd/sup 3+/: E = 0.1491 plus or minus 0.0008 cm/sup -1/, R lambda 0.596 plus or minus 0.002, g l.9918 plus or minus 0.0010; for Eu/sup 2+/ DELTA E = 0.l784 plus or minus 0.0009 cm/sup -1/, R = 0.612 plus or minus 0.003, g = 1.9927 plus or minus 0.0010. For Eu the hyperfine structure of the 2 isotopes is resolved for the 001 direction of the magnetic field. The ratio of nuclear moments and the coupling constants found are: K/sub 151/ = 32.62 plus or minus 0.10 gauss; K/sub 153/ = 16.23 plus or minus 0.10 gauss; mu 151/ mu 153 = 2.26 plus or minus 0.02. The hertzian spectrograph used for these experiments permits study of the paramagnetic absortion by eliminating scattering. It is briefly described, and the scheme of the new elements is given.
