PRODUCTION OF POSITIVE $pi$-MESONS IN VARIOUS NUCLEI BY 660 Mev PROTONS

The energy spectrum of pi /sup +/ mesons produced at 45 deg to the incident beam by 660-Mev protons incident on Li, Be, C, Al, and Cu was measured. The cross section d sigma /d OMEGA for pi /sup +/ formation in these elements is calculated, and conclusions drawn from the fact that all the spectra are similar. The differential cross section d/sup 2/ sigma /d OMEGA dE for production of pi /sup +/ mesons was measured at 158 Mev in Ag and Pb. Conclusions are drawn about the dependence of the pi /sup +/ meson ts between Li nd Pb. For elements between Li and Al the dependence is given by d sigma /d OMEGA = (1.17 plus or minus 0.05) A/sup 2/3. Considerably fewer pi /sup +/ mesons than indicated by this formula are produced in elements after Cu. (auth)
