ENERGY SPECTRA AND ANGULAR DISTRIBUTIONS OF $pi$$sup +$-MESONS PRODUCED ON CARBON BY 660 Mev PROTONS

The energy spectra of pi /sup +/-mesons produced by 660 Mev protons on carbon were measured at five angles from 19 deg 30' to 55 deg . The absolute cross sections d sigma /sub +/d OMEGA wcre also measured. In the c.m.s. of the two colliding nucleons the mean pi /sup +/-meson energy was found to be independent of the angle of emission and was 100 Mev. Conclusions are drawn concerning the angular distribution of pi /sup +/-mesons; the total cross section for tbeir production on carbon by 560 Mev protons is estimated and found to be (46.7 plus or minus 5.1) 10/sup -27/ cm/sup 2/. The probability for production of pi /sup +/ -mesons in p--p-collisions in the carbon nucleus is twice as small as the analogous probibility for free p-- p-collisions. (tr-auth)
