RADIATIVE CAPTURE OF ALPHA PARTICLES TO STATES OF O$sup 18$ AND F$sup 1$$sup 8$

The radiative capture of alpha particles in N/sup 14/ and C/sup 14/ has been studied for bombarding energies between 1.3 and 3.0 Mev. Four narrow resonances were observed in the reaction N/sup 14/( alpha / gamma )F/sup 18/, corresponding to levels in F/sup 18/ at 5.60, 5.67, 6.24, and 6.65 Mev. Two narrow resonances were observed in the reaction C/sup 14/( alpha , gamma )O/sup 18/, corresponding to levels in O/sup 18/ at 7.63 and 8.05 Mev. These two are 1/ sup -/ states. The decay schemes of some of these reacmodes in thermal neutron fission was calculated from a revised semiempirical atomic mass formula, and pairing energies were subtracted to give the effective energy releases. It was found that predictions of flssion yields bore little resemblance to the yields determined experimentally. The yields were sharply peaked at a mass ratio of 1.34, and there was only a very shallow valley. (W.D.M.)
