The absorption spectra of dilute ZrCl/sub 4/ and ThCl/sub 4/ solutions in molten alkali chlorides are considered. Starting with approximations of the crystalline field in the jl bond, the displacement of the absorption band with change in temperature and radius of the cation salt solvent is explained. The absorption bands observed are due to the electron transitions 4p/sup 5/6f yields 4p/sup 5/5s for ZrCl/sub 4/ and to 6p/sup 5/8f yields 6p/sup 5/7s for ThCl/sub 4/. (tr-auth)
