The 1/sub 11/1/sub 10/ transition of interstellar formamide (NH/sub 2/ CHO) wa s detected at 19-cm wavelength in the galactic canter sources Sgr A and Sgr B2. Statistical equilibrium calculations, which indicate that the 1/sub 11/- 1/sub 10/ and 2/sub 12/-2/sub 11/ transitions are inverted for large r anges cf densities and temperatures, suggest an NH/sub 2/CHO projected density of ~10/sup 15/ cm/su p -2/ in SBr B2. Argumensa are presented that all of the previusly observed K-doublet transitions of formamide, methyl alcohol, formic acid, and acetaldehyde are inverted and amplify the background continuum radiation.
