The passage of radioiodine through the forage-cow-milk food chain was investigated as a part of the bioenvironmental research program. Artificially generated /sup 137/I-labeled aerosol was released in the irrigated foage area, which contained air samples and fallout collectors. After the forage was harvested and fed to cows the milk and forage were analyzed by gamma spectroscopy. Descriptions are given of the facilities, methods of air contamination, and methods of surface contamination and decontamination. Other experiment s were conducted on fallout contamination released from Plowshare excavation experiments. Contaminated hay was fed to dairy cows and sampling and analysis procedures are described. Results indicated that the spread of contamination could be minimized under the prevailing field conditions. (HLW)
