A LABORATORY ELECTRON BOMBARDMENT FURNACE

Journal Article · · J. Sci. Instr.
A furnace is described in which small ingots (approxi-mately 3 x 1/2 x 1/ 2 in.) of metal can be melted on a watercooled copper hearth under a high vacuum (less tham 10/sup -4/ mm of mercury). The charge is heated by bombardment with a stream of electrons emitted from a tungsten filament suspended above the charge. A d-c potential of up to 10 kv applied between the hearth and the filament is used to accelerate the electrons. The use of such a furnace for purifying niobium and melting high purityuranium is described. (auth)
