Atoms activated by the (n, gamma ), (n,p) or I.T, processes can react with gaseous organic molecules in unique bimolecular displacement processes. Such reactions of Cl/sup 38/, Br/sup 80/, I/sup 128/, and H/sup 3/ are summarized, new evidence is presented, and problems of mechanism are discussed. A search for a bromine isotope effect dependent on the difference ip charge with which Br/sup 80m/, and Br/sup 82/ are born from the (n, gamma ) process is described. (auth)
