Kinetic Energy Moderation, Reaction Probability, and the Neutron Cooling-Down'' Model. The lower and upper thresholds of the reaction probability curve are discussed, and the analogy of hot-atom reactions with neutron coolingdown is pointed out. Equations for neutron cooling-down are developed with the perturbation effect, and several approximate solutions are evaluated. Halogen Gas-Phase Organic Yields. Limiting organic yields are tabulated for the reactions of hot atoms from the nuclear reactions /sup 80m/Br(I.T.)/sup 80/Br, / sup 79/Br(n, gamma /)/sup 80/Br, /sup 37/Cl(n, gamma /)/ sup 38/Cl, and /sup 127/ I(n, gamma /)/sup 128/I, with various hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons. The yields increase in the order /sup 80m/(Br(I.T.), /sup 80/Br /sup 38/Cl, and / sup 128/I and increase with the number of hydrogens in the target. /sup 38/Cl Gas Phase Bond Rupture. Data on /sup 38/Cl remaining chemically bound following (n, gamma ) activation are tabulated for various chlorinated methanes and are plotted as a function of the normalized gamma ray energy required for dissociation. Constant-Flow Regulator. A pressure regulator was modified for increased inlet pressure when the temperature of a gas chromatography column is increased, so that a relatively constant exit flow rate is obtained. Programmed Temperature Regulator. A simple, inexpensive regulator was devised for increasing the temperature of a gas chromatography unit at an adjustable linear rate. Chromatography Peak Integrator. A method was devised for recording the tothl activity of each compound separated by the column with no increase in dead time. The pulses from a GM tube are fed into a rate meter and a decade scaler with a selector for actuating a mechanical register. (D.L.C.)
