Chemical effects of ionizing radiations on aqueous inorganic solutions

Journal Article · · Journal of Chemical Education (U.S.)

The chemical changes induced in aqueous solutions under irradiation by alpha, BETA, gamma, and x rays are described. The mechanism of free radical formation, the principles of chemical dosimetry, the determination of primary yield of molecular products and free radicals, and the kinetics of some chemical reactions in aqueous solutions are discussed. To discover some of the factors determining retention of activity after neutron irradiation of solid substances, a comparison of the retention and radiation decomposition of some chromates was made.
