Coating materials for electric wire (in Japanese)
The present status of improvement of physical properties by irradiation using electrons to polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride is discussed. Heat resistance is achieved in polyethylene by generating intermolecular cross-linking of the polymer, electron irradiation, and when additives and radiation dose are properly selected, at temperature of 100 to 120 deg C, the service life of 10,000 to 30,000 hours can be obtained. Environmental stress cracking resistance in polyethylene reaches 1,000 hours by the irradiation of 3 Mrad in the presence of surfactant. Oil-, acid- and alkaliresistance in polyethylene is good. As one example, swelling in 12O deg C Xylene of the irradiated material at 50 Mrad is 106%. Tensile strength of the irradiated polyethylene at 24 Mrad shows 0.02 kg/ mm/sup 2/ at elongation 100%. Inductivity, dielectric loss tangent and volume resistivity of polyethylene are improved by the irradiation. Polyvinyl chloride can be improved so as to have practical physical properties by irradiating a material to which proper cross-linking additives are added. The service life at about 100 deg C is 100 days, and also tensile strength and wear resistance are remarkably increased. (JA)
