ZIRCONIUM AND TITANIUM INHIBIT CORROSION AND MASS TRANSFER OF STEELS BY LIQUID HEAVY METALS

Journal Article · · Trans. Met. Soc. AIME
OSTI ID:4306436
Zirconium and titanium inhibit solution mass transfer of steels by liquid bismnuth, mercury, and lead. It is shown that in bismuth and mercury, these adsorb on the surface of the steels and subsequently react with nitrogen and possibly carbon from the steels to form inert, adherent surface layers of ZrN, TiN, or TiN + TiC. Data are presented which describe the condition under which these deposits forma. These inhibitors decrease the solution rate of iron into bismuth, and require a higher supersaturation for precipitation of iron from bismuth. (auth)
