THE DETERMINATION OF VANADIUM AS AN IMPURITY IN ZIRCONIUM AND ZIRCALOY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4305368
Vanadium is oxidized with potassium chlorate in concentrated sulfuric acid to a yellow colored compound, probably a polyvanadate, and is determined by spectrophotometric measurement of the intensity of the color at 410 mu. The method covers the determiuntion of vanadium as an impurity in zirconium and Zircaloy in the range 5 to 100 ppm. Intenference by impurity and alloying iron, nickel, and chromium is eliminated by measurement of the absorbance of the samples against corresponding samples in which the vanadium color is not developed.
