THE DETERMINATION OF TITANIUM AS AN IMPURITY IN ZIRCONIUM AND ZIRCALOY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4298797

Titanium forms a yellow complex with hydrogen peroxide in a 1.5 to 3.5 N sulfuric acid solution. The color development is instantaneous and is stable for at least 24 hr. The maximum absorbance of the complex is at 410 mu. The method covers the determination of titanium as an impurity in zirconium and Zircaloy. The range of the method is from 10 to 100 ppm on a one gram sample basis. The principle interferences are vanadium and molybdenum. They must either be removed or a correction made for them. The interference of colored ions such as iron, nickel and chromium (III) is compensated for by the use of a portion of the sample solution, not treated with peroxide, in the reference cell. (auth)
