Health physics indoctrination and re-indoctrination of Idaho Nuclear Corporation employees

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4304579

From third Health Physics Society midyear topical symposium; Los Angeles, California, USA (29 Jan 1969). See CONF-690103P3. All new employees of Idaho Nuclear Corporation are required to attend a health physics indoctrination lecture. The presentation is devised to satisfy legal requirements, allay fears, correct misconceptions, acquaint employees with basic concepts of radiation and radiation protection, and familiarize them with company policies and plant procedures. The lecture includes the basic concepts of radiation, units of radiation measurement, biological effects of radiation, principles of radiation protection, contamination control procedures with demonstrations showing proper methods of donning and removing anticontamination clothing, and procedures to follow during emergencies. The Health Physics re- indoctrination program provides an annual review of some aspects of radiation safety procedures and policies for all Idaho Nuclear Corporation personnel working in radiation areas, and acquaints them with recent changes in radiation protection procedures. The re-indoctrination also provides a chance to ask questions on radiation safety that the employees did not have the opportunity, knowledge, or experience to ask on previous occasions. The presentation is varied from year to year as specific needs become apparent. These orientation lectures have increased job efficiency, decreased contamination spread, lowered radiation exposure, and resulted in better rapport between the average employee and the health physics department.
