HISTORY OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON RADIOLOGICAL PROTECTION (ICRP)

Journal Article · · Health Physics (England)
The ICRP was established by the second International Congress of Radiology in 1928, since this time the Commission has establibhed the basic pattern for radiation protection recommendations that have gone into use throughout the world. The first quantitative value of permissible dose was promulgated in 1934 and remained in effect until 1960. In 1950 the MPD was lowered by a factor of about 2, and in 1966 it was again lowered by a factor of about 3. In addition to the development of the basic concept of MPD, the Commission has also adopted maximum permissible concentrations of radioactive materials in air and water and the whole body. (auth)
