Coal injection has been practiced at Scunthorpe Works since 1982. After a decade of regular use Scunthorpe`s coal injection rates have risen to become among the highest in the world. The furnace operation is smooth and there are no measurable detrimental effects upon blast furnace performance. This paper briefly describes the coal injection equipment and aspects of the blast furnace operating practice which has enabled these injection rates to be achieved.
