An original series in the tantalum cluster oxohalide chemistry with isolated (Ta{sub 6}Br{sub 15}O{sub 3}){sup 5-} units: Crystal structure of Cs{sub 2}LaTa{sub 6}Br{sub 15}O{sub 3}

Journal Article · · Journal of Solid State Chemistry
A new ternary oxobromide series, M{sub 2}RETa{sub 6}Br{sub 15}O{sub 3} (M = monovalent cation, RE = rare earth) based on (Ta{sub 6}Br{sub 15}O{sub 3}){sup 5-} units, for which the valency electron count (VEC) is 14, has been isolated by solid state chemistry. The crystal structure of Cs{sub 2}LaTa{sub 6}Br{sub 15}O{sub 3}, which crystallizes in the P{bar 3}1c space group (a = 9.512(2){angstrom} and c = 17.93593){angstrom}, has been refined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. This structure is strongly related to the structure of CsErTa{sub 6}Br{sub 18} with a shift of the units along the c axis, which allows the building of new cationic sites. The developed formula of this compound is M{sub 2}RE[Ta{sub 6}Br{sub 9}{sup i}O{sub 3}{sup i}Br{sub 6}{sup a}]. The lanthanum is located in an original environment formed by three O{sup i} and six Br{sup a} belonging to three adjacent units, and the cesium is 12-coordinated in a complex site formed by six Br{sup i} and six Br{sup a} belonging to six adjacent units. Short distances between rare earths and Ta{sub 6} clusters are encountered.
