The new compounds M{sub 2}RETa{sub 6}Br{sub 18} (M=K, Rb, Cs; RE = Eu, Yb), MRETa{sub 6}Br{sub 18} (M = K, Rb, Cs; RE = La to Lu and Y), and RETa{sub 6}Br{sub 18} (RE = Nd to Tm) have been isolated. All these compounds are isotypic with KLuNb{sub 6}Cl{sub 18}, space group R3, except the series CsRETa{sub 6}Br{sub 18}, which is isotypic with CsLuNb{sub 6}Cl{sub 18}, space group P31c. They exhibit 16 or 15 e{sup -}/Ta{sub 6} depending on the monovalent cation stoichiometry and the rare earth oxidation state, in opposition to the corresponding niobium bromide chemistry for which only compounds with 16 e{sup -}/Nb{sub 6} had been obtained. The structure of CsErTa{sub 6}Br{sub 18} has been determined by X-ray diffraction on a single crystal: P31c (Z=2) with a = 9.661(1) {Angstrom} and c = 18.037(3) {Angstrom}, R = 0.048 and R{sub w} = 0.062 for 620 symmetry independent reflections. A comparison with the isotypic CsErNb{sub 6}Br{sub 18} allows discussion of the Me-Me intracluster distances, which mainly influence the stability of the various oxidation states of the Nb{sub 6} or Ta{sub 6} cluster in bromide chemistry.
