Title: CHEMISTRY DIVISION SEMIANNUAL REPORT FOR DECEMBER 1957 THROUGH MAY 1958

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4301954

The excitation functions for some reactions of U/sup 238/ with monoenergetic C/sup 12/ ions have been measured by the use of the stacked-foil technique. The (C/sup 12/,4n) and (C/sup 12/,6n) reactions were found to occur through the formation of a compound nucleus followed by neutron evaporation. The excitation functions for the ( alpha ,n), ( alpha ,2n), ( alpha ,3n), ( alpha ,4n), ( alpha ,pn), and ( alpha ,p2n) reactions of the isotope Cf/sup 252/ with 20- to 40-Mev He ions have been measured by use of the deflector-channel recoil assembly probe The triton augular distributions corresponding to transitions to the ground states aud measurable excited states of the product nuclei for the reactions Al/sup 27/( alpha t)Si/up 28/ and Fe/sup 56/( alpha , t)Co/sup 57/ were measured. The technique of recoil-energy measurements was developed by use of the reaction Bi/sup 209/ ( alpha ,2n)At/sup 211/. The reac tions Bi/sup 209/( alpha ,3n)At/sup 210/, Bi/sup 209/( alpha ,4n)At/sup 209/,and Cm/sup 244/ ( alpha ,2n)Cf/sup 244/ were studied. Total fission cross section curves are given for U bombarded with C/sup 12/, C/sup 13/, and Ne/sup 20/. Neutron branching ratios are given for Pu isotopes. Work was essentially completed on the study of the reactions Ni/sup 58/( alpha , alpha n)Ni/sup 57/, Ni/sup 58/( alpha , n)Ni/su p 56/, up 56/. The alpha spectrum of a sample of mixed californium isotopes containing Cf/sup 249/, Cf/sup 250/, Cf/sup 251/, and Cf/sup 252/ was investigated. Md/sup 25/ and Md/sup 256/ were bombardment of Es/sup 253/ with He ions in the 60-in. cyclotron. The decay scheme of Pa/sup 233/ is presented. The alpha-particle spectrum of Pa/sup 229/ has been studied Half-life measurements of two excited states of Dy/sup 161/ were made. A series of bombardments with N/sup 14/ ions on stable praseodymium has been carried out. Three alpha-particle emitters, Dy/sup 150/, Dy/sup 151/, and Dy/sup 152/, were produced. Decay schemes are given for the isomers of Tc/sup 95/ and Tc/sup 97/. The investigation of neutron-deficient Sr isotopes by use of heavy-ion bombardment is presented. This study resulted in the discovery of the new nuclides Sr/sup 80/ and Rb/sup 80/. Nuclear spins and magnetic moments are presented for Pa/sup 233/ Np/sup 238/, Pu/sup 239/, Am/sup 241/, and Cm/sup 242/. Electronic ground states are preseated for Ac, Th, Pa, U, Np, Pu, Am, and Cm. The spins and nuclear magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the radioactive halogens have been determined. The products formed in the radiolysis of cis and trans 1,2dichloroethylenes with 40-Mev He ions are presented. The chemicai properties of astatine are being studied. Fluorescent studies of Am and Cm in LaCl/sub 3/ matrix are described. (For preceding period see UCRL-8141.) (W.L.H.)
