Processing of long lengths of textured YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}x} wire is hindered by the slow rates required by the solidification process. Factors influencing the microstructural development of textured wires are discussed. Theories describing the rate limiting steps of the solidification process are reviewed, and potential means for increasing process speeds are discussed.
