2-Deuterio-2'-carboxybiphenyl has been cyclized to fluorenone with sulfuric acid, polyphosphoric acid and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. The isotope effects for these reactions have been determined. Hydrogen fluoride cyclization exhibited a kHKD of 3.02, whereas the other acid-catalyzed cyclizations had isotope effects in the range 1.13-1.46. The significance of these results is discussed with respect to possible mechanisms for these substitutions.
