Radionuclide dynamics in insect food chains

Journal Article · · Manitoba Entomol., v. 4, pp. 22-32
OSTI ID:4298968

Knowledge of food chain dynamics is a prerequisite to understanding the fate of chemical compounds in ecosystems, since food chains are the primary biological mechanisms for the dispersal and concentration of radionuclide contaminants in the environment. The dynamics of material transport along insect food chains has received considerable attention in recent years, and mathematical models have been developed describing the variables affecting the behavior of radionuclides in food chains. Knowledge of uptake, assimilation, and metabolic turnover of radionuclides has led to predictable models of transient behavior of materials along food chains, resultant trophic level coqcentrations, and efficiencies of trophic level exchange.
