STUDIES ON THORIUM-AMMONIUM AURINTRICARBOXYLATE CHELATE: PART II. COLORIMETRIC DETERMINATION OF THORIUM

Journal Article · · J. Sci. Ind. Research (India)

A colorimetric method for the microdetermination of thorium using ammonium aurintricarboxylate is described. The interference of various ions in the estimation of thorium with this reageri has also been investigated. For obtaining satisfactory results, the amount of the reagent to be used should be at least 20 times the molar concerirution of thorium and the pH of the medium should be 5.00 plus or minus 0.05. The smallest amount of thorium (Th/sup 4+/) that can be estimated with the reagent is 20 ppm. (auth) During polarographic determination of beryllium in a supporting electrolyte consisting of 0.5M lithium chloride and at pH 2.38, beryllium, at a concentration of 5 x 10/sup -3/M, has heen found to give two well-defined waves, having the values -1.79 V and -2.00 V for half wave potentials. The two waves correspond to the reductions Be/sup 2+/ - - Be/sup -1/ -- Be . At pH 3.3 and below, the diffesion current at the first stage of the reduction remains proportional to the conceutration of Be in solution up to 8 x 10/sup -3/M. With the help of a working curve, the concentration of beryllium in a test solution has been calculated. (auth)
