KINETICS OF THE EXCHANGE OF DEUTERIUM BETWEEN DIBORANE AND TETRABORANE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4296905
The kinetics of the exchange of deuterium between diborane and tetraborane have heen found to be complex. The results indicate that the exchange proceeds by two different paths, one involves two hydrogen positions in tetraborane and the other involves the remaining eight or all ten hydrogen positions. The major reaction is interpreted in terms of a rate-determining reaction of BD/sub 3/ from diborane with B/sub 4/H/sub 11/ while the minor reaction is eavisaged as a rate-determining actlvation of two sites in tetraborane followed by rapld deuterium exchange wlth B/sub 2/D/sub 6/. Boron atoms also exchange in this system although detailed kinetics studies have not been made. (auth)
