The reactor is of the swimming pool type -a light water moderated and reflected heterogeneous reactor, using enriched uranium as fuel. The reactor is used for training, some radioisotope production, and research in physics, engineering, and biology. The reactor is designed to operate at a maximum power level of 1 Mw(h).
