THE SWIMMING POOL REACTOR, APSARA

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4283229
The description and reports on the design details of Apsara, the first atomic reastor to go into operation in Asia, are given. The reactor, which is of the swimming pool type, is designed for a maximum power level of one megawatt. It is a very versatile research tool, being provided with a thermal column, 8 experimental holes, a through channel next to the core for oscillation experiments, and a special shielding corner facility. It is being used, among other things, for research in nuclear physics, for the production of radioisotopes, and for the training of personnel. The reactor reached criticatily for the first time on August 4, 1956, and experience with its operation in tropical conditions over a period of 18 months is reported. Data on the utilization of the reactor are given. (auth)
