Leukopenia, Neutropenia and Bacteremia in Mouse Following Two Successive Irradiations by X-Rays; LEUCOPENIE, NEUTROPENIE ET BACTERIEMIE CHEZ LA SOURIS, APRES DEUX IRRADIATIONS SUCCESSIVES PAR RAYONS X
A study was made of the course of leukopenia, neutropenia, and bacteremia in mice subjected to whole body x radiation to determine a possible correlation between their variations and the bimodal nature of the lethal response. The mice, five days apart, were subjected to two whole-body x irradiations of 220 r each. The mice were sacrificed at intervals of 9, 12, 14, 19, 29, and 40 days after the first exposure. Spleen and cardiac blood examinations were made on each mouse. The results showed that the percentage of animals in which the leukopenia was marked passed through maxima near the 12th day and the 22nd day. The maxima coincide in time with the highest mortality rates observed in irradiated mice. The neutropenia goes through two critical minima which are essentially contemporaneous with these rates. A bacteremia was observed only in the vicinity of the first maximum in the mortality rate. (J.S.R.)
