The results of an exploratory investrigation of nucleation and fracture of thorium bismuthe platelets through the use of high-intensity ultrasonic equipment are presented. The intermetallic compound particles so produced are of such size that they may be easily trans ferred to the bismuth phase from the LMFR blanket for subsequent extraction. The experimental apparatus and techniques are described, and sample photographs are included. (J.R.D.)
