Title: THE PSEUDO-BINARY SYSTEMS OF URANIUM CARBIDE WITH ZIRCONIUM CARBIDE, TANTALUM CARBIDE AND NIOBIUM CARBIDE

The three pseudo-binary systems of uranium carbide with zirconium carbide, tantalum carbide, and niobium carbide respectively were examined. Methods that were developed for handling the highly pyrophoric uranium carbide powder are described. The melting-point/ molecular-composition curves were determined for each system and found to be smooth curves. X-ray analysis shows that a complete range of solid solutions exists in each system and that the lattice-spacing/molecularcomposition curves obey Vegard's law very closely. (auth)
