CHLORINATION OF ZIRCONIUM DIOXIDE BY GASEOUS CHLORINE IN THE PRESENCE OF SOLID CARBON

A study is made of the relationship between the rate of chlorination of briquets of a mixture of ZrO/sub 2/ and soot on the one hand and a series of factors rod the composition of the gas phase in chlerination and the other. It is established that in this process the C may oxidize to CO/sub 2/ or to CO, the latter of which acts to reduce the almost fifty cent less than with solid C at the same Cl/sub 2/ consumption. When the briquets are chlorinated with solid C, the CO/CO/sub 2/ ratio in the gas phase rises with increasing temperature, attaining a value of 5 at f 1:2. Three regions of dependence of chlorination rate upon temintermediate from 520 to 700 , and a diffusive at > 700 . Mathematical expressions for the relationship between the chlorination rate and the partial pressure of the Cl/sub 2/ and the rate of flow and the Cl/sub 2/ are presented. The temperature of the chlorination process is 700 .
