The elastic constants of thorium single crystals were deterimined at ultrasonic frequencies employing both resonance and pulse-echo techniques. The values at 300 deg K in units of 10/sup 11/ dyne/cm/sup 2/ are, C/sub 11/ =7.53, C/sub 12/= 4.89, and C/sub 44/ = 4.78. The constants C/sub 11/ and C/sub 44/ increase and C/sub 12/ decreases with decreasing temperature and extrapolate to 7.79, 4.82, and 5.13, respectively, at 0 deg K. The Cauchy relation C/sub 12/ = C/sub 44/ occurs, quite probably fortuitously, at 27l deg K. The anisotropy factor 2C/sub 44//(C/sub 11/-C/sub 12/) at room temperature is 3.6 which is comparable to the values for lead and gold. Calculated Poisson's ratios, sigma / sub 100/ and sigma /sub 111/, indicate a much stronger resi stance to contraction in the close-packed planes thin in the less densely packed (l00) planes. (auth)
