The five independent elastic constants of beryllium were determined with the pulse echo technique at a frequency of 10 Mc/sec. The values extrapolated to 0 deg K are C/sub 11/ = 29.94 plus or minus 0.06, C/sub 33/ = 34.22 plus or minus 0.12, C/sub 44/ = 16.62 plus or minus 0.05, C/sub 12/ = 2.76 plus or minus 0.08, C/sub 13/ = 1.1 plus or minus 0-5 in units of 10/sup 11/ dyne/cm/ sup 2/. Voigt averaging and Reuss averaging of the single crystal elastic constants give excellent agreement because of the small magnitude of the nondiagonal elements, C/sub 12/ and C/sub 13/. The averaged values compare favorably with previous data from polycrystalline beryllium. (auth)
