A SIMPLIFIED METHOD OF CALCULATING BETA DOSE RATES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4277544
The total dose rate in air from an exposed radioactive source, such as surface contamination on reactor power plant components, must necessarily include the contributions from beta and low energy (E < 0.5 Mev) gamma rays as well as the contribution from the high energy gamma rays. An analysis of this type of prob lem is presented with emphasis placed on a method for calculating the dose rates from beta rays and low energy gamma rays. It was found that the ratio of beta to gamma ray surface dose rates varies from a low of 7.3 for Mn/sup 54/ to a high of 8800 for Y/sup 90/. (auth)
