FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS OF THE CHEMOTHERAPY OF RADIATION SICKNESS IN EXPERIMENTS ON MONKEYS

>The rational use of chemotherapy in the treatment of radiation siekness prevents the development of postradiational bacteremia and the transformation of a latent chronic dysentery in monkeys into a clinically apparent acute form of the disease. Chemotherapy has a favorable effect on the outcome of radiation sickness in monkeys, preserving the lives of a large proportion of the animals even when exposed to an absolute lethal dose of x rays. Streptomycin in the principal therapeutic program suggested for radiation sickness can be replaced by other antibiotics, albomycin and colimycin, or by the sulfonamide drug phthalylsulfathiazole.
