Disilicides of Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, and Y have been prepared. The Ce, Pr, and Nd compounds are tetragonal as previously reported; the Sm, Gd, Dy, and Y compounds are orthorhombic, space group Imma. Their structures are slightly distorted versions of the tetragonal MeSi/sub 2/ structure. The magnitude of the distortion appears to increase with decreasing size of the metal atom. Chemical and x-ray diffraction studies of GdSi/sub 2/'' indicate that the composition is actually close to GdSi/sub 1.4. EuSi/sub 2/ crystallizes in the tetragonal system apparently due to the anomalously large size of the metal atom. (auth)
