CHEMICAL REACTIONS OF VARIOUS FLUORINE SYSTEMS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4272456
The chemical reactivity of the following fluorine systems was tested: fluorine--C-816 Oil (Penfluorodimethylcyclohexane); fluorine-- C-437 Oil (2,2,3- trichioroheptafluorobutane); fluorine--Duo Seal Pump Oil; fluorine -- Lube Oil; fluorine-- Concentrated Sulfaric Acid; anm fluorine--Concentratcd Phosphoric Acid, The C-816 and C-431 oils are used as buffer solutions separating hydrocarbon oil from fluorine in the diaphragm system of pulsating pumps. Experimental test results indicated that both the C-816 and C-437 oils reacted vigorously with fluorine. This reaction is highly exothermic and contact between fluorine and either of the oils may be hazardous. The Duo Seal purap oil, lube oil, concentrated sulfuric acid, and concentrated phosphoric acid were considered as possible substitute compounds for the C-816 and C-437 oils. Each of these compounds was tested for chemical reactivity with fluorine. Experimental test results indicated that a vigorous reaction occurred for each system. These compounds, therefore, are not recommended as snbstitute materials for the C-816 and C-437 oils. (auth)
