Advantages and disadvantages of the following basic types of seals are described: carbon ring, labyrinth, liquid film, and face or contact. Seal oil systems required to serve the seals are described. The most common is a combined lube--seal system that has a common oil reservoir and pumping system that supplies oil for lube and seal requirements. The main components are described and illustrated.
